Description"If because of your generosity and love a few humans find their lives, what do you think will happen?" - Rumi

Lights On is a program we ran from 2006 through 2008 where volunteer would serve outside the Santa Ana Jail starting from 11pm Sat. night til 4am Sun. morning. We provided a place where people can hang out 'til they find a ride home.

The project is initiated by Saint Vincent De paul Society of Orange County because a woman who was released was killed after wandering into a bad neighborhood. They wanted to give an option for people to stay in a safe area. It is possible to volunteer with the program on any other night of the week through SVDPOC, and you do not have to commit to staying for the whole night.

We offered:
- free food & coffee,
-resource listings (eg. phone numbers of addiction-recovery centers, shelters, legal advocates, counselors, etc)
- free use of our cell phones.
- encouragement & compassion

We usually gave away bus passes, men's sweaters & jackets, healthy but good tasting snacks, candles, cigarettes, lighters, and most importantly the time of a few nice night owls.

People interested in being counselors, sociologists, legal advocates, journalists, social activists, caring people, etc will benefit from this program.

Tips for Volunteers:
- you do not need to stay the whole night, stay for however long you feel comfortable
- Dress warm!
- Take a nap during the afternoon before
- Bring your cell phone
- Clothing donations are gratefully accepted
- You will be asked to sign a one-time volunteer application/waiver
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age
- The Society of St. Vincent De Paul reserves the right to conduct a background check on all volunteers
- the area outside the jail is safe, but a few blocks away, close to the 7-11 on Flower and 1st is a bit shady.
- communicate your ideas and availability to the volunteer coordinator
- promote the program by encouraging others to try volunteering for a couple hours
